The first step of aluminum smelting is to produce alumina. In the process of alumina production by sintering, the raw materials, such as bauxite, lime, alkali, etc., should be sintered first. The sintering process is carried out in a rotary kiln, and the sintering temperature is about 1300 ℃. The final process of alumina production is to bake aluminum hydroxide into alumina. At present, the rotary kiln is generally used, with a baking temperature of 1200-1250 ℃ (the reaction temperature in this paper refers to that the temperature of kiln gas used for heating at the material temperature port is 200-300 ℃ higher than it).In the production of aluminum metal by molten salt electrolysis with alumina as raw material, and in the process of electric furnace steelmaking and some metallurgical and chemical production, carbon products such as anode paste or carbon block, electrode paste, electrode (rod), anode plate are needed. In the production of carbon products, raw materials (such as petroleum coke, metallurgical coke, delayed coke, asphalt coke, anthracite) should be calcined at 1100-1300 ℃ and without oxygen, so as to remove water and volatile matter, make the structure more dense, increase the true proportion, enhance thermal stability, oxidation resistance, mechanical strength, conductivity and thermal conductivity. This process can be completed in a rotary kiln. Due to the combustion of volatile components, the temperature of exhaust gas is high. Generally, waste heat boiler is used to recover heat.
In the process of aluminum electrolysis, some fluorinated materials such as cryolite (na3aif6), aluminum fluoride (aif3), sodium fluoride (NAF) are also needed as fluxes. The production of fluorinated salt first uses sulfuric acid and fluorite (CaF2) as raw materials to produce hydrogen fluoride, which is also carried out in a rotary kiln - an internal or external heat kiln. It is also used for drying various fluorinated salt products and slag gypsum.
In addition, red mud, a large amount of waste residue from alumina production, is mainly used to produce red mud cement. Therefore, sintering alumina plant is often attached with a large-scale red mud cement plant, which also uses rotary kiln.
